LIPSYNC SPENDS A WEEK WITH MARILYN
November 23, 2011 18:03
LIPSYNC SPENDS A WEEK WITH MARILYN - Equity investment and post services provided on hotly anticipated period drama - London, UK - 23rd November 2011 - LipSync Productions, the investment and equity services company, and LipSync Post, the leading post-production facility, have provided investment and post-production services including scanning and recording, conform, grade, VFX and sound for the hotly anticipated film, My Week With Marilyn. The film, produced by Trademark Films, BBC Films, The Weinstein Compeny, and UK Film Council, stars Michelle Williams in the title role of Marilyn Monroe and documents the tense interaction between Marilyn and Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) duruing the 1957 production of The Prince and the Showgirl and her brief, idyllic escape to the English countryside. Norman Merry, Finance Director, LipSync, said, "Having previously worked with Trademark Films on Dean Spanley and A Bunch of Amateurs, we were delighted to welcome them back for this beautiful film with its great script and exceptional cast." LipSync's colourist, Lee Clappison, worked closely with the Director of Photography, Ben Smithard, to create a nostalgic look that accurately referenced the 1950s period. The original film, The Prince and The Showgirl and other Technicolour films of the time, as well as photographic references, were used to produce a palette for the 'film within a film' shots - a complicated process of de-saturating, then over-saturating specific channels that helped to differentiate these scenes from the shots away from the film set. LipSync's VFX team was involved at an early stage of the production, helping plan for the shoot and providing on-set supervision services. In post, LipSync VFX Supervisor Sheila Wickens worked closely with production and editorial to lead the VFX team in completing over 350 visual effect shots. The range of visual effects work varied extensively, consisting of 3D environments work, CG aircraft, modernity removals, splitscreens, extensive cosmetic work and 2.5d Matte Paintings. A particular example is the establishing shot of Windsor Castle that was created using the compositing tool Nuke's 3D projection tools. Stefan Drury, Head of Visual Effects, commented, "I am delighted with the range of work we produced for this project. Although the post period condensed and the shot count grew dramatically we were never fazed and always maintained the high level of work and quality control that we have become know for. Working with the teams from Trademark and The Weinstein Company again was a pleasure and we look forward to the next project." My Week With Marilyn opens in the UK on 25 November 2011 ![]() |

LIPSYNC IMMERSED IN THE DEEP BLUE SEA
November 21, 2011 09:41
LIPSYNC IMMERSED IN THE DEEP BLUE SEA - Equity investment and full post services provided for emotional period drama - London, UK - 21 November 2011 - LipSync Productions, the investment and equity services provider, and LipSync Post, the full service post-production facility, have completed work on The Deep Blue Sea (UK Film Council, Film4, Protagonist Pictures, Artificial Eye, LipSync Productions). The adaptation of Terence Rattigan's play of complex emotion and class division is directed by Terence Davies (Distant Voices, Still Lives, The House of Mirth) and stars Rachel Weisz, Tom Hiddleston and Simon Russell Beale. Kate Ogborn, Producer, Fly Films, said, "We had a great experience working with LipSync, we were extremely well looked after by the in-house producer Aileen McIntosh who always went the extra mile for us. Our team all enjoyed collaborating closely with the talented team at LipSync across sound, grade, VFX and titles to realise Terence's vision for the film." The grade, completed by Stuart Fyvie, takes its cues from the post-war 1940s setting and combines the look of old movies of the time with a feeling of austerity. There is an element of diffusion and interior shots are lit either with natural light or with delibertely dim electric light to give a feeling of seeing just enough. Fyvie commented, "Working with Terence was challenging but great fun - these's certainly a level of expectation but he's so charming that you really want to get it right for him. This was Terence's first experience with DI and he was really excited by the possibilities." The overall brief for the sound mix was to keep it natural, simple and quiet. Robert Farr, Re-Recording Mixer, worked hard to keep the dialogue clean and clear without too much ambience or noise behind it. Music was also kept to a minimum, with a single composition by Samuel Barber that is heard in the opening scene and reprised in parts in two or three specific scenes. In a key scene set in a London Underground station, the gathered crowd sing to keep their spirits up during an air raid. Farr comments, "It was a great scene for the sound mix as we had wonderful reverb from the tunnel, the echo of the singing and the low rumble of bombs dropping in the distance. Moments like this have more impact in a very quiet film, and this one was particularly lovely." LipSync's VFX team, led by Sean Farrow, completed a variety of visual effects shots for the film, ranging from complex 3D environmental matte paintings to simple clean ups and modernity removals. The opening and closing shots of the film mirror each other - one in daylight, one at night - each lasting two-and-a-half minutes, sweeping across a bombed-out post-World War London square. The VFX team was on set during the shoot to advise and work with the production team in order to time and choreograph the shots. The team then added CG bombed-out buildings, a matte painting of St Paul's cathedral, a CG crane, digital smoke and birds; the attention to detail even included scanning in the 1940s wallpaper to use within the CG model of the houses. The Deep Blue Sea opens in the UK on 25 November 2011. It is the latest in a line of critically acclaimed films on LipSync's roster, which has recently included We Need To Talk About Kevin, Jane Eyre and My Week With Marilyn.

David Thompson, Producer, Origin Pictures, said, "We have made our last four projects with LipSync and each time we have found the experience very rewarding and successful. LipSync have great teams who go the extra mile, both on the creative and the administrative sides. It is a vibrant, creative hub - very focused on giving the best results for the production. And in a world where co-production finance is increasingly complicated they bring a refreshing simplicity to the financing and investment process." The sound mix for the film was a major factor in creating the errie atmosphere of the film, The locations chosen for the film, and the pace, timing and spaces created gave the sound team plenty of opportunity to increase the tension by playing with the off-screen suggestion to enhamce the drama. Paul Cotterell, Senior Re-recording Mixer, commented, "In Nick Murphy we had a director who understands and enjoys the value of a film's soundtrack, and likes to challenge and play with its conventions. The Original music by Daniel Pemberton also played a great part in the mix. we hope we're done this terrific film justice." LipSync's Stuart Fyvie graded the film with a very desaturated, drained look to depict the bleakness of the period, as well as deepening shadows to heighten the errie atmosphere and bringing out the glow of the filaments in the new electric light. Norman Merry, Financial Director, LipSync, said, "We were delighted to welcome David and the Origin team back to LipSync for this outstanding piece of work. It presented some wonderful creative challenges for our post teams to bring out the chill factor, and the results certainly send shivers up my spine."
