LipSync nominated for Best Ident at the Promax UK 2008 Awards
October 28, 2008 09:35
LipSync Post has been nominated in the Best Ident category at the Promax UK 2008 awards for its eye-catching teaser campaign promoting Animal Planet's channel rebrand. LipSync's creative team of Howard Watkins and Julia Hall devised a concept to use the typography of the new Animal Planet logo and create animal shapes - an Elephant, a Meerkat, a Dog, a Shark and an Orang-utan - from the letters. The animal characters were then animated to behave like their real counterparts, and compisited into backgrounds of their natural environments using correct lighting and grading to blend in seamlessly. At the end of each sequence the animal fragments form the new logo. "We are delighted to receive this nomination, we are very proud of our work on the Animal Planet campaign," said Howard Watkins, Creative Director, LipSync Post. "It was a technically complex but fun project, and we feel it conveyed the spirit of the channel." The Promax UK 2008 awards winners will be announced on November 1st, 2008. LipSync Post creates Teaser Campaign for Animal Planet Rebrand
October 27, 2008 18:25
LipSync Post has designed and created an eye-catching teaser campaign to promote Animal Planet's channel rebrand. LipSync's creative team of Howard Watkins and Julia Hall devised a concept to use the typography of the new Animal Planet Logo and create animal shapes - an elephant, a meerkat, a dog, a shark and an orang-utan - from the letters. The animal characters were then animated to behave like their real counterparts, and composited into backgrounds of their natural environments using correct lighting and grading to blend in seamlessly. At the end of each sequence the animal fragments combine to form the new logo. The early work was carried out in 3DS Max utilising its modelling tools and V-Ray for look development. Once the characters had been designed they were transferred into Maya to be custom rigged, then the production switched to a more traditional film pipeline utilising Maya, Mental Ray and Shake. Shake was used to comp the elements, then various layers of the project were reassembled in After Effects for the point where the idents transition from the 'real world' back into a more graphics-style resolve of the logo. Lester Mordue, Creative Director, Animal Planet International, said "When I first saw the still examples of the work Howard Watkins had in mind for a re-brand ident on Animal Planet, I was blown away! It was by far the most arresting collection of images I'd seen in a while. The idea of using the actual letters themselves to imitate and come to life as animals was groundbreaking. In a very simple and yet technically complex way, LipSync's team have created a series of spots that communicate to our viewers that the change in our logo is something to get excited about and that animals are at the heart of what we do, no matter what change comes." "The main idea behind these sequences was to show the proposed new logo in an animal environment, making the channel analogous with the Animal Kingdom itself in an exciting and eye-catching way," said Howard Watkins, Creative Director, LipSync Post. "We are so proud of this campaign, we've worked hard to make it fun and suprising while remaining true to the ethos of the channel." The five stings will run prior to the launch of the new branding on Animal Planet on the 1st of October, 2008.
