LIPSYNC has provided full post-production services for Testament of Youth, the feature adaptation of Vera Brittain’s powerful memoir of the Great War. The all-star cast includes Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina), Dominic West (The Hour) and Miranda Richardson (Mapp and Lucia).
The film was produced by Heyday Films and BBC Films. It was adapted by Juliette Towhidi (Death Comes to Pemberley), directed by James Kent (The Thirteenth Tale, The White Queen), and produced by David Heyman and Rosie Alison.
LIPSYNC provided grading, sound mix, VFX, titles and all deliverables.
Adam Inglis, Colourist, said, “[DoP] Rob Hardy and I discussed very early on how the First World War had been done visually so many times before, and how we definitely weren’t going to do that. Whilst one might initially expect the F65 to produce very modern, super-sharp images, Rob had already done a lot of work in-camera and the grade was all about keeping a soft, subtle, timeless feel. Testament of Youth is not another “mud and blood” film, it’s an emotional one, the sun shines even in the trenches and we played to that.”
Robert Farr, Re-Recording Mixer, said, “We aimed to create a gentle, subtle soundtrack to convey the emotional tone of the film. Perhaps the most challenging element was creating a soundscape for when the action goes inside Vera’s thoughts – there’s gentle music, the sound of her breathing, or just nothingness – creating an atmosphere from stillness.”
Peter Hampden, Managing Director, The LipSync Group, said, “We were delighted to work with Heyday Films on this beautiful and moving film which really brings home the futility of the First World War and the loss of a generation.”
